I know FRS radios are Piss Weak at 0.5 Watts and can not have a detachable antenna, I know you are supposed to have a license for GRMS (Pay a fee, get a licenseвЂ¦ sounds like a way to supplement cash flow for a over budget, bloated Government entityвЂ¦ IвЂ™m looking at building a radio setup that will fit in a 50 Cal (M2A1) Ammo Can, on a budgetвЂ¦ and I do not care about the CB vs HAM vs MURS vs GRMS vs FRS debateвЂ¦ I have a HAM license, and I am a CB Operator, But if gets bad enough to deploy with this thing, licenses and вЂњLegal Power limits/radio configurationsвЂќ are not going to matter much anymoreвЂ¦ Now, IвЂ™m not a Prepper/Survivalist to the extreme some are, however, I do like having good Communications setups in a mobile package. I have decided to start a project that is along the вЂњGo BoxвЂќ вЂњBug Out SetвЂќ ectвЂ¦ Guess its time to pick up another VHF/UHF rig tooвЂ¦ 3 in the future Possibly with a Silver Streak 150 behind it (which I also just acquired) to help me reach out and touch someoneвЂ¦. The good news is I acquired a Realistic TRC-453, the no so distant cousin to the Uniden PC122XLвЂ¦ It is capable of AM/SSB on the FCC 40 channels, and is short enough to fit in one of these flare cans, so I see a Comm Can Ver. The Antennas being used are a Comet 2M/70cm mag mount and President New York 11 meter Mag Mount. No external speakers were required for the radios as there is enough holes in the face plate, and the radios have enough audio drive in that small area to be heard with no trouble. Here it is installed in the rental for the trip, working greatвЂ¦. The external power plug was wired to the terminal strip.

Power to the box is provided by a standard cigarette lighter/power port plugвЂ¦ not idea, but IвЂ™m not going to wire up a rental.Дecided to install a USB/Power Port on the side to charge phones on the outside of the box, due to space constraints, it isnвЂ™t all enclosed, but it is very portable. The terminal strip under the GPS was wired up from the Anderson Power Pole receptacle with 10 AWG and the other terminals were daisy chained off that.ДЄ Female 12v Inline plug was wired in to the terminal block to allow plugging in the GPS Power cable without hacking it up and still provide the required 5VDC to the GPS.ДЄ bracket was fabricated to hold the 2вЂќ Muffin Fan running at 15.5CFMвЂ¦ Yeah, it circulates the air through the box pretty wellвЂ¦ Holes were cut for the 2 radios, a slot between the radios for cooling air intake, GPS/Fan Exhaust, and one to drop the microphones down in for storage. It also has a fence to help keep the cuts straight. It is basically and upside down Jig Saw mounted to a table. Great tool for doing projects like this and only $99. The face plate was measured, marked out and cut using my new Rockwell Blade Runner 2. This was to ease maintenance, modification, and construction.ДЈ/8вЂќ Birch Ply for the Face Plate, 1Г—2 furring strip for the frame, and ВјвЂќ Ply for the вЂњfloorвЂќ, and prefab metal strip to make the mount rails: So I decided to do the insert different this time and not make it solid walled like the last one. It is the same Height and Width and the 50 Cal Ammo Can, but it is 3.5вЂќ deeper at 9.5вЂќ The вЂњAmmo CanвЂќ I used this tie is actually an Aerial Flare Storage Can. I knew I would be renting a car for the trip, and needed to be able to throw some radios in, and would power them from the Power Port (more commonly known as the Cigarette Lighter!). Basically, the trip was about 5 hours via a lot of area where cell coverage is a bit spotty, to say the least.
